The Architecture of Permanence: Why Immutable Sizing is the Ultimate Luxury
The most common objection to high-density industrial jewellery is a practical one: a tungsten carbide band cannot be taken to a jeweller and resized. Soft metals allow themselves to be cut, stretched and re-soldered to accommodate a change of mind. A structural absolute does not.
We treat that as a design property rather than a defect — but a property that has to be answered with an operational protocol, not a shrug. Here is the physics, and here is what we actually do about it.
Can tungsten carbide rings be resized?
No — not by any conventional jeweller's method, and you should be sceptical of anyone who says otherwise.
Resizing a gold or silver band works because those metals are malleable. The jeweller cuts the shank, adds or removes material, solders the join and re-forms the circle. Every step depends on the metal deforming without fracturing, and on the join being weldable.
Tungsten carbide does neither. At Mohs 9.0 it resists the deformation that stretching requires, and its crystalline matrix will fracture rather than flow. There is also nothing to solder to: the structure is a sintered carbide matrix, not a cast metal. Cutting the band destroys its structural integrity, and re-joining it would introduce a mechanical weakness at exactly the point that carries load. The same applies to Technical Zirconia, and largely to titanium.
What we do instead
We do not resolve a fit problem by damaging the piece. The Returns & Resilience Protocol handles it at the operational level:
Protocol 01 — Complimentary Archive Exchange. You are not required to return the original archive — keep it as a spare, or gift it. This applies once per acquisition.
Two things worth noting. You do not queue at a post office to send anything back, and the original piece stays intact rather than being cut open. One exception: pieces modified with a Causal Inscription are permanently locked and final sale, so measure carefully before adding engraving.
How to get the size right the first time
Since the exchange applies once, it is worth doing this properly. The full method is in the Structural Band Calibration Guide; these are the points people most often get wrong.

A correct fit slides on with mild resistance and needs a small deliberate tug to come back over the knuckle. If it spins freely or comes off without effort, it is too large — and a heavy band that is too large will be lost.
Frequently asked questions
Can a jeweller resize a tungsten ring at all?
No. Tungsten carbide cannot be stretched, cut and soldered, or annealed like precious metal. Any workshop offering to resize one is either substituting a different ring or damaging the structure.
What if my finger size changes over the years?
Protocol 01 covers one complimentary size exchange per acquisition, which handles an initial mis-measurement. Longer-term changes in finger size are outside that protocol, but you keep every piece you have been sent, so an archive built over time tends to cover a range of sizes.
Do you offer half sizes?
Available sizing is shown on each product page. Where a half size is not offered and you fall between, the practical rule with a wide band is to take the larger size — a fraction loose is wearable, a fraction tight is not.
How long does an exchange take?
Replacements ship via priority express at no cost. Standard US delivery runs 5–10 business days; details are on the Shipping & Duties page.
Can an engraved ring be exchanged?
No. Pieces carrying a Causal Inscription are permanently locked and final sale, and the 14-day window does not apply to them. Confirm your size before adding an inscription.
The steward's position
A band that cannot be altered forces the decision to the front, where it belongs. Measure once, properly, and the object stays exactly as it was forged — no cut shank, no solder seam, no record of indecision.
